Few are making use of a government scheme subsidising on-street chargepoints.

Only a third of councils have taken advantage of a government fund to finance on-street electric car chargers, research has found.

Only 115 councils out of 320 have used the residential chargepoint scheme in the six years since its launch.

The scheme provides grants for authorities. Experts believe council-installed connectors will be key if the government is to fulfil its promise to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

Installations hit a peak in 2021, when councils facilitated 1,513 — the equivalent of four a day, the Daily Mail reported. The figure fell to just 846 last year — a drop of more than 40 per cent.
